Big Vision and Small Steps

Happy New Year from Medius Ag

With the new year comes new goals. In our professional lives, we like to call them things like benchmarks, metrics, deliverables, etc. In our personal lives, meanwhile, they usually get tossed into the category of resolutions. No matter what you call them, at Medius Ag we encourage you to simultaneously think big and small. This might seem counterintuitive, but allow us to attempt an explanation.

For most of us, a year represents a significant period of time. Yet as we get older, the years also have a tendency to sneak up on us time and time again to the point where they do not feel as significant as they perhaps once did. “Just wait ‘til next year,” is a common refrain for those of us who are sports fans when our team once again did not win the championship.

Thus, it is easy to get sucked into the false notion that a year is not that long. So we set abstract goals for the new year without adopting an action plan to achieve them. I may want to lose 10 pounds, but without taking concrete steps to adjust my diet and activity level, I may as well announce that I am going to teach myself rocket science and launch myself to the moon.

Vision without action is just a dream, action without vision just passes the time, and vision with action can change the world.

On the other end of the spectrum, sometimes we set grandiose goals that are far too granular and nearly impossible to achieve. I’m going to exercise for one hour every day this year. Then sometime around mid-February (if you are lucky to have made it that long), you miss a day because of extenuating circumstances at the office, or a sick child, or a broken-down car, or old, achy knees, or…the list goes on. Through no fault of your own, you have missed your goal and are likely discouraged about it and maybe even give up. Just wait ‘til next year.

This year, we at Medius Ag challenge you to find the balance that works for you. Think big and adopt a vision, but think small and make the supporting goals attainable. Grant yourself some grace when you fall short. Most of all, when you do fall short, pick yourself up and keep going.

Best wishes for a healthy, prosperous, and successful new year from your Medius Ag family!
